It is now legal for people who hold a concealed carry gun license to openly carry a handgun most places in Texas, but there are a handful of restrictions.
The open carry law passed by the 2015 Texas Legislature went into effect on Jan. 1, and a companion law to allow the open carry of handguns on college campuses takes effect Aug. 1 on a limited basis.
Handguns may be carried into government buildings, except in the area of courts and court-related offices, into banks, grocery stores, restaurants, most public parks and while walking down the street.
