Mayor Eugene Escobar Jr. says his first year in office was less about pushing policy and more about learning the realities of the job in a city straining to keep up with rapid growth.
In an interview with The Princeton Herald, Escobar said he entered office without a clear roadmap and he quickly learned the mayor’s role was shaped as much by collaboration as by authority.
“When I first got elected, there wasn’t really anything to go by,” Escobar said. “They handed me a phone, a badge and basically told me to have fun.”
Escobar said much of his first year was spent understanding what the mayor can and cannot do, figuring out how to advance his vision and identifying who he could work with to make progress. “You still have to work with a team, work with the residents and work with city staff to get things done,” he said.
He now sees his second year as a time to begin executing the ideas that originally brought him into office.
