After winning just two district games all of last season, the Princeton boys basketball team is happy to be playing meaningful games in late January.

Head coach Eric Lockman said there hasn’t been any extra pressure placed on his Panthers by the coaching staff and that his team is playing “loose,” but last Thursday night’s home game against McKinney marked the most important District 6-6A contest Princeton has played in its second season as a Class 6A school.

In a game in which a win would’ve moved Princeton to within one game of McKinney for third place in the 6-6A standings, the Panthers were seven minutes away from doing just that. However, Princeton was unable to build on a nine-point lead in a 66-62 overtime loss. The Panthers were held to four points in overtime, including just one field goal.

“I was impressed with their fight,” Lockman said. “I wish we were a little smarter with the ball when we had a nine-point lead. We took some horrific shots. We had guys taking shots that shouldn’t be shooting the ball. But it’s high school basketball. It’s just unfortunate. McKinney is a really good team.”

Julius Johnson finished with 18 points for Princeton. Aveion Dixon added 14 points, followed by 11 from Marcus Flowers.
