Princeton head boys basketball coach Eric Lockman wants to get as many kids as possible in Princeton and the surroundings areas involved in basketball.
One way that he does it is to hold a youth camp every summer at Princeton High School. And while he has been pleased with the turnout over the years, he knows that number can always increase. The rapid increase in population within city limits over the past several years has helped. But there’s always room for more.
Last year, Lockman decided to delay the start of the camp until after July 4th. It’s a decision that’s led to a big increase in turnout. Last week, 78 boys entering first through ninth grades descended on Princeton High School to learn basic fundamentals such as dribbling, ball handling, shooting, passing, rebounding and playing defense while having fun for three hours per day.
“The schedules are so busy in June with other camps,” Lockman said. “There’s church camp. A lot of kids are playing AAU and summer ball. In July, it seems that their schedules free up a bit.”
