The Daniel Johnson era kicked off with a resounding effort by the Princeton football team Friday.
Princeton outscored North Garland 36-0 over the game’s final three quarters after the Panthers clung to a 13-7 lead and went on to earn a 49-7 victory over the Raiders at Jackie Hendricks Stadium.
Johnson, who had served as Princeton’s offensive coordinator the previous three seasons and is now the Panthers’ head coach, watched his offense amass 439 total yards while the defense held the Raiders to 222 yards and forced three turnovers.
Sophomore quarterback Ayden Hughes was sharp in his first career varsity start. He completed 19 of 29 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns. His first two touchdown passes were caught by Josh Flowers on throws of 65 and 3 yards, with the latter giving Princeton a 13-0 lead with 1:16 remaining in the first quarter.
North Garland reduced the lead to 13-7 after a Ryan Davidson 2-yard touchdown plunge and Drake Ardis PAT kick just 25 seconds later.
However, the remainder of the game was all Princeton.
Sammy Musimbe finished with three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving).
Princeton (1-0) will look to make it two straight wins next Thursday when the Panthers travel to McKinney ISD Stadium for a non-district game against McKinney North. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
