One week after wrestling to fourth place at the Texas Women’s Classic — an event described by Princeton head coach Ryan DeLaVergne as the toughest tournament the Lady Panthers will wrestle in this season — senior Erin Marquez followed it up by doing even better last weekend.

Marquez went 3-0 to earn first place at last Saturday’s Eagle’s Nest Tournament, held at Prosper High School.

The Princeton senior began her dominant outing by pinning Lewisville’s Kaiya Ellis just 34 seconds into their quarterfinal match. Marquez trailed 5-0 in her next match but used her strength to overcome the deficit and pin Melissa’s Paige Jessen in the semifinals. Marquez completed her undefeated showing by cruising to a 17-0 technical fall over Midlothian’s Gia Woodrum in the first-place match.

Marquez was one of three Lady Panthers to wrestle in a first-place match. Alexandria Ramos placed second at 125 pounds, while Addy Smith was the runner-up at 190.

Ramos pinned her first opponent, then dominated Prosper Rock Hill’s Leah Smedley with an 8-1 decision in the semifinals but lost by a 15-0 technical fall to McKinney’s Riley Drennan in the first-place match.

Smith needed less than five minutes to pin each of her first two opponents, which included a first-period fall of Winnsboro’s Graicen Fulmer in the semifinals, but lost a 9-0 major decision to Frisco Memorial’s Camille Harris in the first-place match.

Princeton’s boys team also had two wrestlers advance to the finals: Jeremiah Soto (126 pounds) and Nolan Culverhouse (150), both of whom finished second.

Soto went 3-1 with a pin, a 20-2 technical fall and a 12-5 decision.

Culverhouse also won three of his four matches, highlighted by a thrilling 7-6 decision over the tournament’s top seed at 150 pounds, Frenship’s Giovanni Isidro, in the semifinals.

Thaydan Fillingham (106 pounds), Jose Leija (113), Logan Wilczynski (120), Carlo Guerra (144), D’Kylan Lovett (157), Chris Winkle (165), Maddox Obera (215) and Kodjo Nomagnon (285) also competed for the Princeton boys at Prosper.

Nalani Mornes (110), Analee Holguin (115), Lillian Fowler (130), Isobella Cook (145) and Aniya Hunter (155) also wrestled for Princeton at the Eagle’s Nest Tournament.

Earlier in the week, Princeton’s boys lost a hard-fought dual to Prosper by a 40-35 final on Dec. 17. The Panthers got wins from Leija (forfeit at 113 pounds), Soto (injury time at 126), Guerra (pin at 144), Culverhouse (forfeit at 150), Winkle (pin at 165) and Nomagnon (forfeit at 285).

That same night, the Lady Panthers earned a 42-24 win over the Lady Eagles. Six pins paved the way for the 18-point victory. Princeton got pins from Nalani Mornes (110), Holguin (115), Marquez (120), Alexandria Ramos (125), Kayden McKinnie (140) and Cook (145).
