Last week, the Princeton boys soccer played three matches in a 25-hour span at a tournament in Frisco, and despite the demanding schedule, the Panthers turned in a solid effort, finishing 1-1-1.
Princeton opened the two-day event with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Frisco Lone Star on Friday. Later that day, the Panthers battled Mount Pleasant to a 1-1 draw before rallying to earn a 4-1 victory over Frisco Independence on Saturday for their first win of the season.
Senior Ryan Garcia, juniors Derek Mireles and Sal Gutierrez, and freshman Brayan Ordonez each scored a goal in the win over Independence. Mireles and Ordonez also added one assist apiece. Senior Aldo Longoria and freshman Angel Gomez were each credited with an assist.
Against Mount Pleasant, sophomore Al Lopez found the back of the net on a goal set up by junior Ivan Olvera, who recorded the assist.
Head coach Kent Ackmann said Mireles and senior Damian Cerda stood out for Princeton over the weekend.
“We embraced the opportunity to play against some high-level teams,” Ackmann said. “Lone Star won state two years ago, and Mount Pleasant only lost two of 21 matches last year.
“It was very unfortunate not to get a result against Lone Star after controlling much of the match. We didn’t allow the negativity of a possible missed offside call on their goal at the end of the first half to distract us. We went out in the second half and held possession for 70% of the time while creating 19 shots and 24 crosses. We defended well, holding them to only eight shots. Overall, we held a 53-16 advantage in shots over the three-match weekend.”
