One week after Princeton used a strong second half to pull away for a win over Newman Smith and conclude non-district play with a 2-1 record, the Panthers were hopeful to carry over that momentum into Friday’s District 6-6A opener against Jesuit.
However, the Panthers’ offense was never really able to take flight in a 45-0 loss to the Rangers at Jackie Hendricks Stadium. Princeton (2-2 overall, 0-1 district) was held to 150 total yards of offense and committed three turnovers. Jesuit (2-2, 1-0) was particularly stout against the run, holding Princeton to 19 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Sophomore quarterback Ayden Hughes had some success through the air. He completed 12 of 25 passes for 129 yards but was intercepted twice. His favorite target was senior Jayden Rogers, who caught five passes for 59 yards. Junior Houston Newberry hauled in two passes for 48 yards.
Meanwhile, Jesuit finished with 514 total yards and was balanced offensively, throwing for 245 yards and adding another 269 on the ground.
The Rangers built a 10-0 first quarter lead on a Ty Daboub 7-yard pass reception and a Kelly Bishop 30-yard field goal.
Jesuit used a 21-point second quarter explosion to pull away from Princeton and took a 31-0 lead into intermission.
Princeton will play at nationally-ranked Allen (4-0, 1-0) next Friday and then a bye awaits the Panthers the following week.
