The Princeton girls basketball team is looking for a new head coach.
Six Smith told The Princeton Herald on Monday that he will not be retained and was asked to step down as head coach after a meeting with former Princeton ISD athletics director Stacey Dillard.
Dr Chivonne Kiser, who has been Princeton ISD’s athletics director since March 10, told The Herald Monday that she couldn’t comment on Smith’s departure because it occurred before her first official day on the job, but confirmed that the district has begun its search for a new head coach.
The position was posted on the Texas High School Coaches Association’s job board March 13 and to Princeton ISD’s website Monday.
Smith finished 7-22 in his only season as Princeton head coach, including wins over District 6-6A opponents Plano and Plano West.
The Lady Panthers missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2019-20 season, though it was a rebuilding year as Smith was tasked with having to replace three seniors that helped lead the team to a 24-11 record the previous season.
Smith felt that team was seeing noticeable gains with their skill sets, gained a significant understanding of his offensive and defensive sets as this season moved along and that there is a lot of potential within the team’s underclassmen.
“I’m still shocked and hurt because I had a vision for Princeton girls basketball that is left unfulfilled,” Smith said in an email. “We could’ve built a powerhouse. I was doing the work, but it’s been cut short.”
Bryanna Washington will lead the program until Princeton hires a new head coach, Kiser said.
