Princeton’s Daniel Tyutyunnik won the Class 6A state title at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet in Abilene in the 242-pound weight class after lifting a total of 1,900 pounds between the meet’s three events: squat, bench press and deadlift.
Tyutyunnik broke the state record for bench press after a lift of 560 pounds and also won the “Outstanding Bench Presser” award for the heavyweight classes.
Tyutyunnik’s total was 135 pounds more than runner-up Dickinson’s Adolfo Cruz, who lifted 1,765 pounds.
“Daniel has worked for three years battling and getting stronger each year and last year coming in second made him just work harder,” Princeton head coach David Pasternak said. “We already had a game plan coming in to win it by being smart with the opener and then just loading up and beating our competition.”
Princeton had three lifters place in the top eight.
Grady Upchurch finished just out of medal contention, capturing sixth place at 198 with a 1,560-pound total. Alijah Williams took eighth in the superheavyweight class with a 1,375-pound total.
“Grady had some stiff competition, so placing sixth was a great accomplishment,” Pasternak said. “Alijah, our freshman, was outstanding. He got stronger each month. So proud of his achievement.”
Kayden Alvarado, competing in the 123-pound class, had a squat of 345 pounds, but didn’t post a successful lift in the bench press and deadlift.
