Princeton’s third ban on new residential housing expires this month.
The nation’s fastest-growing city by percentage is approaching a pivotal deadline. The sweeping moratorium on new residential development is set to expire Nov. 30 with no mechanism available for further extensions.
The pause on residential housing activity was imposed three times over the past year as the city struggled to keep pace with surging population growth and strained public infrastructure. City staff concerns included public safety, quality of life and the capacity of essential services.
In a series of formal memos to the City Council beginning in September 2024, Assistant City Attorney Grant Lowry warned repeatedly that Princeton’s explosive growth was outpacing the ability of its water, wastewater, roadway and police systems to serve new residents.
