It was a big weekend for the Princeton wrestling team Friday and Saturday at the Mike McCready Memorial Invitational.
Six Panthers earned a top-six finish, with Erin Marquez (120 pounds) and Addy Smith (190) earning first place in their respective weight classes at Colleyville Heritage High School. Alexandria Ramos finished second at 125, while Isobella Cook was fifth at 145.
On the boys’ side, Austin Aparicio placed fifth at 165 pounds, and Breylon Kelleher earned sixth place at 190 pounds to lead the charge for the Panthers.
Aparicio had a strong showing in the consolation bracket and also avenged a loss to Lewisville Marcus’ Ashtyn Springer earlier in the day. Aparicio lost to Springer by pin in the quarterfinals but then proceeded to win three of his last four matches, including an 18-11 decision over Springer in the fifth-place match.
Meanwhile, Kelleher started the day with a pin of Argyle’s Enoch Nanna in the second round and a pin of Dallas Pinkston’s Carlos Torres in the quarterfinals. However, Kelleher lost his last three matches, including an 18-1 technical fall to Fort Worth Arlington Heights’ Antonio Rodriguez in the fifth-place match.
Korey Boykin went 1-2 with a first-period pin at 113 pounds, Logan Wilczynski went 2-2 with two pins at 120, Landen Fulton was 2-2 with two pins at 144, D’Kylan Lovett finished 2-2 with a pin and an 11-9 decision at 157, and Kodjo Nomagon went 0-2 at 285.
Earlier in the week, Princeton lost 53-16 to Plano East in a dual held at Princeton.
Plano East rode a dominant start to cruise to the win. The visitors won each of the first eight bouts and built a 41-0 lead after a second-period pin by Ian Garcia in the 165-pound match.
Princeton finally got on the board after a pin by Aparicio in the 175-pound match. It was the first of three consecutive wins for the Panthers, who also got a pin by Kelleher in the 190-pound match and a 13-2 major decision from Maddox Obera in the 215-pound match.
However, those three wins only reduced Princeton’s deficit to 42-16. With only two matches remaining in the dual, Plano East had already built enough of a scoring margin to clinch the win.
Princeton’s boys are scheduled to compete at a tournament Saturday at Wylie East before hosting Prosper next Wednesday. The Lady Panthers will take aim in the Texas Women’s Classic on Saturday at Lewisville High School and will also wrestle Prosper on Wednesday.
