The Princeton Police Special Response Team is getting a new ride.
Councilmembers approved the $355,000 purchase of a Gurkha Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) from Terradyne Armored Vehicles of Ontario, Canada.
The Gurkha will replace a surplus military MRAP, or mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle, given to the city two years ago by the Wylie Police Department.
Sgt. Cody Trim said the vehicle had been used only twice, was impractical for city streets and currently does not shift out of first gear.
Asked about disposal options, Police Chief James Waters said he would like to return the vehicle to the military or place it at Veterans Memorial Park as a monument.
Funding for the MPV purchase comes from sales tax revenue authorized for the project by the Princeton Community Development Corporation, Jim Wehmeier, CEO of the Princeton Community Development Corporation and Princeton Economic Development Corporation, said at council’s Monday, March 9 meeting.
