For those wanting to celebrate and remember those who sacrificed for our freedom, Memorial Day is about more than just a three-day weekend.
To honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice there will be Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at the Princeton Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25.
There will be a Korean War veteran who will be speaking, a flag raising ceremony, a three-volley salute and the playing of Taps as well as an invocation and benediction.
Other area events this weekend include the second annual Taste of Farmersville this Saturday.
The event, which will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 23 at the Onion Shed, is hosted by the First United Methodist Church of Farmersville.
Tickets are $1 each and participants can get a small portion of delectable menu items for about two to three tickets.
Restaurants participating include Charlie’s Old Fashioned Burgers, Mr. Jim’s Pizza, Brookshire’s, Lovey’s Café, Pizza Street, The Brownie Cottage, Spivey Cakes, Happy Cucumber, Sugar Hill Country Kitchen, Dairy Queen, Sonic, Naturel View, Bobawok, Jalapeno’s and Savannah’s Meadow. There will also be face painting from the Princess Workshop.
The overall goal is to raise money for the church’s local mission programs.
During the Taste of Farmersville, veterans and active duty personnel will also be honored since the event is being held on Memorial Day weekend.
There will also be a board available for displaying pictures of veterans past and present, fallen heroes etc. or individuals may write the name on a ribbon.
Another local event will be held for Memorial Day this weekend as the Military Heritage Collection of North Texas hosts an open house.
The annual Veterans Memorial Weekend Open House will kick off Saturday night, May 24, with a special dinner just for veterans provided by local businesses. For information about the dinner call 214-794-8992.
At 10 a.m. Sunday, May 24, there will be events such as weapon demonstrations, military uniform and equipment displays. Depending on the weather, rides are given in military vehicles, including tanks, as long as the ground is not soft due to rain. In the event of rain, there is still a host of other vehicles for guests to ride in.
The museum is located at 20798 CR 590 in Nevada. If the military vehicles don’t give it away, those looking for the collection can locate it by looking for a 500-pound bomb mailbox.
